With the announced U.S. release of Vitaros on February 28, 2011, Apricus Biosciences, Inc. may have just revolutionized the multi-billion dollar market for erectile dysfunction remedies. Hailed by some as a superior alternative to industry mainstays Levitra, Viagra, and Cialis, Vitaros makes its American debut after a promising 2010 unveiling in Europe saw it grab a significant share of the $1.2 billion E.U. market for ED treatments.
This exciting development for ED sufferers begs an obvious question, “What makes Vitaros different from the currently available erectile dysfunction treatments?” The answer to this question would seem to have two key components – the delivery mechanism, and the biochemical process that makes Vitaros effective.
Vitaros – A Topical Cream
In contrast to the three erectile dysfunction remedies that represent its strongest competition, Vitaros is a topical cream – not a pill. This allows the drug to be administered topically to the penis, instead of being ingested.
According to the manufacturer, clinical studies showed that this topical delivery mechanism allows the active ingredient in Vitaros, alprostadil (previously available as a suppository or injection), to enter the blood stream immediately, enabling the user to achieve an erection in mere minutes. This delivery system also has the benefit of avoiding the side effects that many men experience from oral ED medications.
How Vitaros Works
Similar to the traditional ED drugs that are administered as pills, Vitaros is a PDES (phosphodiesterase) inhibitor that stimulates increased blood flow throughout the body. Its effectiveness is due to its ability to partially-block the PDES enzyme that is sometimes associated with poor circulation to the extremities (including the penis), while simultaneously boosting cardiac activity.
Studies showed the topical application of Vitaros to be significantly more effective than the competition in treating men with severe ED, however. Because many subjects who had been unsuccessfully treated with Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra, responded favorably to the new drug, this is cause for new optimism among many long-time ED sufferers.
Does Vitaros Represent a Changing of the Guard?
While the final verdict on Vitaros will not be in for some time, its apparent success in treating severe ED – coupled with its fast action and lack of side effects – has caught the attention of everyone associated with erectile dysfunction remedies. Vitaros seems, if nothing else, to be a viable new alternative for men who have previously been unable to achieve satisfactory results with standard ED medications.
